“The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers.”

– Juliette Gordon Low

Building upon the Girl Scouts of the USA's mission "to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place," GSUSA is creating an interactive Women's History Timeline website and digital story repository.

The Timeline launches with a foundational set of women taken from the book Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America, by Jill S. Tietjen and Charlotte S. Waisman (HarperCollins 2008), plus the archives of the authors--re-written and enhanced with new data to inspire girls and women to discover, learn, and share stories from a diverse collection of outstanding American women and their accomplishments.

Please note: The women in this timeline are included because of the accomplishments noted. This doesn't mean that GSUSA (or you) will agree with everything they have ever done or said.

We will actively and continually add to the Women's Timeline to build the number of inspirational stories, and extend our reach to include women across the globe and throughout history. Drop us a note and let us know what you think!

Initial entries in the Inspiring Women Timeline were adapted from:

  • Her Story: A Timeline of the Women Who Changed America, by Jill S. Tietjen and Charlotte S. Waisman (HarperCollins 2008).
  • Additional research provided by Technically Speaking, a national consulting firm that documents the history of women in science and technology and creates new opportunities for women and girls in those areas.
